Reflecting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace

Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict, Peace Direct and the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office invite local peacebuilders to share their views and perspectives on peacebuilding and sustaining peace. This three-day online consultation forms part of the 2020 review of the UN peacebuilding architecture and offers peacebuilders from across the globe an opportunity to contribute their views and experiences, and to reflect on the work of the UN in support of building and sustaining peace.

The consultation will take place on 2 - 4 June 2020 and will be open to participants based anywhere in the world.

Background

The 2016 twin resolutions on the review of the peacebuilding architecture (A/RES/70/262 and S/RES/2282 (2016)) call for a “comprehensive review of United Nations peacebuilding” to be conducted during the 74th session of the General Assembly. The 2020 Review of the United Nations Peacebuilding Architecture will take stock of progress and look forward, with the view of further improving the work of the UN on peacebuilding, with emphasis on implementation at the field level. The 2020 review will look at progress in leveraging the whole UN system to support Member States to sustain peace by infusing peacebuilding into policies, practices, programming, and partnerships – including with civil society.

This online consultation will complement the wide array of activities contributing to the 2020 review, and augment those amended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The overall aims of the consultation will be to:

Consolidate the views and perspectives of local peacebuilders around the world on the work of the UN in support of building and sustaining peace, with regards to engagement with local peacebuilders.
Share local peacebuilders’ experience of progress and challenges in partnering with the UN in peacebuilding since 2016.
Draw out and synthesize the experiences, analysis and recommendations of local peacebuilders gathered in other civil society consultations for the review.
Further the understanding of the relationship between the UN and local peacebuilders and how that partnership can be improved.
Contribute to the discussions, policies and practice of the UN’s support for peacebuilding.

How will the consultation work?

The three-day consultation will take place through an online discussion platform Platform4Dialogue on 2-4 June 2020. During this period, participants will log in and join the discussion at least once a day. You will be expected to read the recommended background materials, key messages, guiding questions, as well as ongoing comments of other participants before contributing to the platform.

The main language will be English, but participants can also use the automatic translation feature to participate in French, Spanish and Arabic.

The online system allows participants to contribute at their utmost convenience and within their own time zone by taking just a few minutes a day to make important contributions to the discussion.
