News roundup
- South Sudanese rebel group, the South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA), led by Peter Gadet, has declared a ceasefire. A splinter group has broken away from the SSLA. They have not accepted the ceasefire claiming Gadet was bought off.
- Four UN peacekeepers were killed by a mine in Abyei. Several more were badly injured. A helicopter sent to evacuate them was delayed for more than three hours after being threatened by North Sudanese troops.
- North Sudan said it is prepared to terminate the UN mission in Darfur (UNAMID) if the UN attempts to “impose new conditions” when its mandate is renewed.
- North Sudan held a Southern shipment of oil leaving Sudan, saying the South had refused to pay customs charges. The oil was released eventually released. Negotiations over future oil transit costs have stalled as the South believes the North is asking too high a price -$32 a barrel – to transport its oil.
