Al-Tahreer Association for Development works to build a free, democratic community in Iraq in which justice and peace prevail. It aims to help bring about independent, impartial and transparent governmental and legislative Iraqi institutions.

The organisation’s goals are to:

• Support and strengthen community participation in the political process and communication with legislative and executive institutions.
• Increase transparency and accountability of governmental and legislative institutions’ activities so as to enhance their performance.
• Build peace and national unity, spread a culture of dialogue and peaceful coexistence in the community.
• Build and develop organisational capacities for local civil society organisations, enabling them to act independently and with a high degree of professionalism.

• Conflict resolution.
• Monitoring elections and referendums.
• Raising awareness of democracy and governance.
• Organising campaigns against corruption.
• Raising-awareness through several campaigns which dealt with the Iraqi constitution, the role of the parliament, democracy and elections, and financial and administrative corruption.
• Promoting the active participation of voters in elections in Ninewa.
• Building trust among the Ninewa population through monitoring the national assembly elections in 2005.
• Leading a coalition of NGOs in Ninewa through the “ACT network” which monitored the referendum on constitutional process, voters’ registry as well as elections of provincial and parliamentary elections.

Major achievements

Strengthening communication and dialogue between citizens and local government, as well as enabling people to participate in the local decision making process, reinforcing transparency and accountability in Ninewa, monitoring elections and the government's performance, combating administrative and financial corruption, strengthening the relationship between citizens and local government, and ultimately helping to build peace and national unity.
