The Gender Awareness Program, Sierra Leone coordinates work on in the interest of marginalised women, children and people with disabilities.

Founded in 2004, the Gender Awareness Program, Sierra Leone (GAP-SL), is a registered community-based organisation initiated to coordinate and mobilise support and resources for gender issues and work in the interest of marginalised women, children and people with disabilities, with the aim of maintaining peace in its communities.

Its aims and objectives are to:

  • Advocate for the inclusion of women, young people, children and the disabled in all decision making processes and developmental programmes.
  • Build the capacity of women's institutions for effective and efficient service delivery in peace building programmes.
  • Mainstream gender issues in national development.
  • Promote the rights and dignity of marginalised groups in society.
  • Raise awareness of human rights, good governance, democracy and the rule of law amongst women and children in Sierra Leone.
  • Promote girls' and children's education.
  • Raise awareness on sexual and gender-based violence referral pathways.
Its achievements include:
  • Monitoring early warning sings in the district.
  • Embarking on peace sensitisation messages during the 2007 and 2012 Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.
  • Carrying out a Violence Free Campaign in the district after the 2007 and 2012 elections.
  • Carrying out a survey of the impact of Ebola on women and girls.
  • Reporting early warning signs to WANEP.
  • Monitoring police, Magistrate Courts and Local Courts on human rights abuse cases.
  • Implementing projects on citizen participation in local governance in partnership with CARL-SL.
  • Implement project on Strengthening Criminal Justice System in Sierra Leone in Partnership with CARL-SL with support from Access to Security and Justice Programme.
  • Implementing a project on Gender Base Violence Referral Pathway System in Schools and Communities, in Partnership with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP).
