Jagriti Children and Youth Concern Nepal (JCYCN) is a Nepalese organisation established by a group of dedicated young people for the protection and promotion of child and youth rights through advocacy, research and campaigning. JCYCN has since expanded its working areas to cover youth and peacebuilding to take into account Nepal’s ongoing peace process.
JCYCN sees itself as a voice protecting the rights of children, youth and women in coordination with government and civil society to bring lasting peace and prosperity in Nepal. JCYCN endeavours to empower youth and children in basic health and sanitation, environmental conservation, disaster reduction, economic accessibility, peacebuilding and establish meaningful social activity.
Ongoing Peace Projects
Nepal Partnership for Children and Youth in Peacebuilding: 3M-Evaluation program
Nepal Partnership for Children and Youth in Peacebuilding is a multi-agency, multi-country and multi-donor (3M) evaluation project has been implemented with the following objectives:
- Systematically and rigorously assess the impact and effectiveness of children and youth participation in peacebuilding (CYPP) – what is working, how and why; and by what criteria.
- Learn and understand what is being done, and document how young people affected by war and violence have transformed into agents of peace
- Better understand how to positively impact CYPP; develop a deeper understanding of how CYPP contributes to benefiting younger age groups and society.
- Identify, make visible and make sense of achievements, gaps, challenges, difficulties and keys to the success of CYPP programs.
- Identify concrete measures and practical steps to improve the quality of future work with CYPP, as well as in peacebuilding, peacemaking, peacekeeping, peace processes and peace consolidation
The project has been funded by Search for Common Ground and Save the Children. It has been implemented in Mahottari, Nawalparasi, Doti and Rolpa districts. Activities of the project have been conducted by eight Child and Youth Clubs in and around 500 children and youths have been directly benefited by the project.
The project has been implementing from November 2014 and lasted until June 2015. Based on findings of the evaluation strategies will be developed for upcoming projects on children and youth participation in peacebuilding.
International Youth Peace Festival
JCYCN is international partner of the “International Youth Peace Festival”. JCYCN has facilitated selecting and sending 100 young people from Nepal to the festival. The Youth Peace Festival aims to promote culture of peace and non-violence. From 2015 the festival turned into“Global Youth Peace Festival” and aimed at to increase participates from 100 countries.
Monitoring Human Rights Situation
JCYCN regularly monitors the Human Rights situation in Nepal in collaboration with human rights organizations and networks. The finding of the monitoring published by the network has been given to the National Human Rights Commission and concerned stakeholders. JCYCN believes that improving human rights situation would automatically improve peace so that continuous human rights monitoring is essential.
Past Peace Projects:
Youth Partnership Program
The project was implemented with the aim of developing capacity of youths aged under 35 in conflict resolution, peacebuilding and leadership development so that they will confidently and with enhanced knowledge engage in peacebuilding process of Nepal. Around 200 youths were trained and have been engaging in peacebuilding activities. The project was implemented in partnership with Youth and Sports Ministry of Nepal.
South Asian Level of Youth for Peace workshop
Three South Asian level workshop of “Youth for Peace” were held in 2007, 2008 and 2009 in collaboration with Asian Research Foundation, Thailand. In total around 150 participants from the all South Asian countries attended the three workshops.
Beside above projects and programs JCYCN has been implementing “Girl Child Rights and Girl Child Friendly City” aimed at reducing abuse of girls through making them aware and empowering them to speak out against abuse. JCYCN also conduct advocacy from local to national level to develop girl friendly infrastructures and cities.
