The Women Leadership Institute (WLI) was founded in 2005 by a group of influential women’s rights activists in Iraq. Today, WLI has become one of the leading voices for the women's movement in Iraq.
WLI offers capacity building for Iraqi women occupying leading positions within the government and civil society in Iraq. It also implements advocacy campaigns across Iraq to secure women’s rights and raising awareness towards sensitive subjects such as violence against women and women trafficking.
Due to the insecure context of Iraq, WLI has been especially focused on raising issues linked to the role of women in peacebuilding and and raising awareness of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which addresses the impact of war on women and their role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
In July 2010, WLI closely assisted UNDP in the organisation of a roundtable with the Iraqi Government to discuss the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 in Iraq.
