Kismayo University was established by a local (registered) charity called Towfiq Welfare Society. The university is one of the largest and most respected institutions of higher learning in Southern Somalia. The university has good links with other institutions of higher learning both within Somalia and outside the country.
In addition to its academic work, the university is also involved in cultural and social activities aimed at serving wider society. KU participates in charity, peaceful co-existence and activities organised by civil society organisations. Traditionally, KU prides itself on thinking locally and acting globally.
The goal of the university is to offer young people in the conflict-affected city of Kismayo an alternative to militia life or emigration. Kismayo University has 200 students, most of whom are from the Middle and Lower Juba regions where, for many years, secondary school was the highest level of education available.
