Kaabong Peace and Development Agency (KAPDA) was formed by a group of peacemakers from the Karamoja sub-region following a period of insecurity including cattle raids and theft, cross-border conflicts, land disputes, domestic violence and many other types of dispute. These conflicts have led to low food production, human suffering, frequent famines, death and under development in the Kaabong district and Karamoja region as a whole.
KAPDA's mission is to build a peaceful, sustainable, conducive and harmonious environment by fostering peaceful co-existence that enhances development by addressing human rights abuses, reducing food insecurity and conflicts in Kaabong district and the Karamoja region.
Major achievements
- Conflict assessment with traditional authorities and elders, women's groups, sub-county peace committees and district peace committees in the 14 sub-counties of the district.
- Participatory action planning on conflict mitigation with traditional authorities and elders, women's groups, sub-county peace committees and district peace committees in Kaabong district.
- Establishment of inter and intra community dialogue groups
The organisation held a cross border dialogue meeting between the people of eastern equatorial state and the Dodoth of Kaabong district of Uganda. This meeting played a large role in the socio-economic development of the people of southern Sudan and northern Uganda. Now there is free and peaceful movement, which has also boosted trade amongst the communities.
