[more_info_box]Last week, violent attacks in the Chadian capital N'Djamena killed and injured more than 100 people. The government said that the Nigerian group Boko Haram was responsible.

Insight on Conflict's local peacebuilding correspondent in Chad, Bouyo Séverin, said the following about these events.[/more_info_box]

Two attacks typical of terrorist operating methods were directed at the Diguel Police Academy and the Central Police Station in N’Djaména, the capital of Chad. Most of the reports indicated around 30 deaths, including four of the attackers, and about 100 injured.

Is Boko Haram behind these attacks? Many witnesses, much like the Chadian authorities, are pointing the finger at the Nigerian terrorist group, mainly because of the involvement of the Chadian troops in the fight against terrorism. In my opinion, whether these acts were perpetrated by Boko Haram or another group, the threat is there and dangerous for the Sahel.

It is therefore important to tackle the root causes of this problem, as well as terrorism itself. All relevant actors must be mobilised (state actors, religious leaders, political parties, traditional leaders, civil society and the media) in a discussion to find a multi-sector solution to the general problem of poverty, and in particular youth unemployment.
