Leadership Initiative for Transformation and Empowerment (LITE-Africa) has operated in Nigeria since 1999, and focuses on conflict mediation, peacebuilding, youth empowerment, gender rights, democracy, community development and good governance in the Niger Delta.
Global reliance on oil and gas for energy has put pressure on oil-producing countries like Nigeria to expand their production and exports. This poses some serious challenges as oil and gas production, transportation and trading have often resulted in negative social and environmental impacts. LITE-Africa’s Global Memorandum of Understanding project educates local communities to negotiate with the multinational oil companies for development funding in a peaceful way.
The 'mindset and reorientation' programme is another of LITE-Africa's projects. This tries to re-orientate the mindset of young people in Nigeria through education in personal development, basic life skills, conflict management and vocational guidance counselling.
